Days 1 to 14 - Ashaninka Eco-cultural Expedition
-
crossing the Andes by bus to jungle frontier town, then by canoe to a remote indigenous Amazon community

meeting and talking with Ashaninka tribe face-to-face in their villages, scattered throughout the rainforest

learning directly about natural plant medicines and indigenous agro-forestry from the Ashaninka on garden and forest trails

observing daily village life, including activities such as manioc beer making, weaving with back-strap looms, healing, fishing

exchanging or buying craft goods (cotton robes, bags, seed jewelery, bow and arrows etc.) directly from the Ashaninka families which produce them

trekking along rivers and through jungle to Peru's 2nd highest waterfall and a chance to observe an important nesting site for macaws

Your Guides
Dilwyn Jenkins will be leading this tour. With a passion for Peru and almost 30 years travelling the country, Dilwyn is an experienced tour guide and expedition leader. He has a Cambridge degree in Archaeology and Anthropology and has written all 6 editions of the Rough Guide to Peru. His Peruvian counterpart - Carlos Montenegro - is operational manager of the expedition and tour. Carlos is also an Anthropologist and one of Peru's top professional photographera as well as General Manager of Ecotribal Peru.

* These prices cover accompanying guide, entry tickets, transport and accommodation (including tents supplied by Ecotribal and native huts) in Peru. They do NOT include international airfare (& Lima airport departure tax) to and from Peru, travel insurance (each tour participant is required to take out their own cover), meals (except while on jungle expedition), drinks or tips (though many breakfasts are included in Cusco hotels) or entry tickets to Machu Picchu or main sites in and around Cusco (a general Cusco ticket can be bought on arrival). The price does not cover any internal flights within Peru. If these are required, they can be purchased directly while in Peru.
A sleeping bag, backpack , hiking shoes and personal hygene kit are necessary for the jungle section of this tour.

the final 80% must be paid before the end of April 2008 (or your place and deposit may be lost)

Ecotribal Ltd reserves the right to change the itinerary, means of transport and destination if circumstances reasonably dictate this course of action

Transport: Bus, canoe and raft (latter is optional, but the laternative is a long walk)

Assuming that the jungle part of the trip goes according to schedule, we have a day to visit the world's oldest stone pyramids at Caral. A site of major human achievement 4,000 years before the Incas, these stone ceremonial structures flourished here 100 years before the Great Pyramid at Giza was built. Later, a night out in Lima (optional).

We travel from Lima to Cusco, ancient capital of the Inca Empire where we relax and acclimatise to the altitude. Bus travel is included in the cost (flights can however be purchased directly in Lima).

Visit historic and cultural sites in Cusco city, which also offers some of the best shopping and nightlife in Latin America. Cusco cuisine - always excellent and inventive- now features the very tasty novo andino line of dishes

Visit main Inca sites within walking distance of Cusco: Qenko - a massive carved rock usued for ritual divination by Inca priests; and Sacsayhuaman - the sacred fortress-temple which still dominates the city's horizon

Stunning early train journey to Machu Picchu, arriving at the amazing citadel around 10am. We have the whole day here to explore the extensive amd magical site, returning down to the village in the valley to spend the night in a hostal.

Time to relax in natural hot springs (Inca baths) and explore the area around Machu Picchu. We catch a train back to Cusco in the afternoon
