Parijaro Solar Radio Project
Installation of a solar radio in a remote Asháninka village
30 December 2004
During the first EcoTribal Expedition (July 2004) the Ashaninka community of Parijaro requested a solar radio communications system for the village. As one of the more remote Ashaninka communities, such a radio would keep them in much better touch with their neighbouring villages and offer significant advantages in the spheres of healthcare and security. On returning to the UK, Mike Paul (expedition member, teacher and long time friend of the Ashaninka) collaborated with Rainbow 2000 on their annual SuperSpirit Camp in Gloucestershire to raise funds for a solar radio system for Parijaro. At the August 2004 camp, during a magic auction chaired by Sid Rawle, the camp managed to raise over £2,200 between them by bringing personal objects to offer for auction and then collectively buying them back. EcoTribal and the villagers of Parijaro are very grateful to Rainbow 2000 management and camp participants.
The solar radio system was delivered by the second Ecotribal Expedition.
