Amazon Rubber (vegetable leather) products
Natural Rubber Latex Bags sustainably produced in the Amazon by Brazilian rubber tappers
The rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) provides a sustainable product for many small scale extractors in the Western Amazon. Working collectively in extractive rainforest reserves, traditional rubber tappers have been gathering natural latex from the trees for several generations. Cattle ranchers compete for their land.
Known as Seringueiros in Brazil, their main work season is between April and August, when it's cooler and less rainy than the rest of the year in the SW Amazon. Over 90% of Acre lies is covered with tropical rain forest. Seringueiros are mainly of forest Indians descent (Caboclos) and usually harvest other products of the forest, like Brazil nuts as well as hunting and small scale forest gardening.
Ecotribal have imported two types of rubber tapper produced vegetable leather bags – fine ones made from dyed rubber sheets, and more rustic ones on the inside of which you can still see the grain of its wooden mold.
