Bora Jewellery - Peru
Originally from the Putumayo region of Colombia, most the 3,000 Bora Indians have lived in Northern Peru since suffering greatly, as virtual slaves to European companies, during the Rubber Boom era. Linguistically close to the Witoto tribe, the Bora are well known for their communal dances which are frequently performed for tourists near Iquitos. Tall shell-rattle dance staffs and large tree-trunk manguaré, or talking drums are their preferred percussion instruments.
Traditional Bora society is based on three distinct intermarrying family groups, or clans. Each group is defined by its specific animal totem. The Bora continue to produce excellent craft goods, including chambira bags, decorated gourd rattles and flamboyant jewellery.
